The Power of Neurodiverse Families

Raising a child is a journey filled with both challenges and profound rewards. As a father of a 3x neurodivergent daughter (autism, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, and epilepsy), my entire family has experienced firsthand the resilience and adaptability required to navigate this path. Readers of this blog are well aware that our daughter Phoebe's journey began with an original diagnosis at 18-months, which has not only shaped our family's life but also inspired my career transition into neuroscience and AI ethics.

In this post, I will share our story and explore how neurodiverse families like ours are driving innovation and advocacy in the neurodivergent community (and beyond). By highlighting the challenges we face and the lessons we've learned, I hope to inspire others to join us in creating a more inclusive and supportive world for neurodivergent individuals.

The Early Years: Diagnosis and Discovery

Phoebe's early diagnoses were a turning point for our family. At first, we felt overwhelmed by the array of therapies and accommodations recommended for her. From occupational to speech therapy, and myriad additional treatments—each session, device, and pharmaceutical was a new opportunity to learn and grow together. However, it was also a time of immense stress and uncertainty. We faced numerous medical appointments, endless paperwork, and the daunting task of understanding complex diagnoses.


Despite these challenges, Phoebe's determination and resilience inspired us to adapt and find ways to support her unique needs. Her early years were marked by significant milestones—learning to communicate her feelings and behaviors through using different skills and tools, mastering adaptive behaviors, and developing a strong sense of self despite the challenges she faced.


One of the most significant lessons we learned during this period was the importance of being proactive advocates for Phoebe's needs (and extending those lessons to teach her self-advocacy). Whether it was navigating the healthcare system, advocating for accommodations in educational settings, or simply ensuring that her voice was heard, we realized that our role as parents was not just to support her but also to empower her to thrive in a world that often seemed designed against her.


Moreover, we quickly discovered that every small victory was a testament to Phoebe's strength first and foremost and our family's resilience secondarily. Celebrating these achievements, whether they were mastering a new skill or simply enjoying a day without a meltdown or seizure, became a crucial part of our journey.


The Power of Family Support

One of the most significant factors in Phoebe's journey has been the unwavering support of our family. My wife has been a constant source of strength and encouragement, reminding me of the importance of empathy and compassion in our interactions with Phoebe. From both my wife and daughter, I have learned to navigate the complex healthcare system, insurance and public support systems, advocate for Phoebe’s rights in educational settings, and celebrate her achievements no matter how small they may seem.


Moreover, our family's experience has taught us the value of community. Connecting with other neurodiverse families has provided us with a network of peers, specialists, and guides who understand our challenges and share our triumphs. This sense of belonging has been invaluable, offering emotional support during difficult times and practical advice on managing daily life with neurodivergent children (who become adults)!


For instance, joining support groups for neurodiverse families—like Florida Atlantic University's Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD)—has allowed us to share our experiences and learn from others who face similar challenges. These connections have been a lifeline, providing us with resources, advice, and a sense of solidarity that has been instrumental in our journey. I have also enjoyed the camaraderie with online communities like Reddit's Neurodiversity, Autism Parenting, and AuDHD Women groups


My wife has also impressed upon me the importance of improving every persons’ life by contributing to them (whether they're neurodivergent or not). By way of example, and when Phoebe was in elementary school, our family took it upon ourselves to improve classroom participation, learning, and enjoyment for all students—and not just Phoebe. Suzy explained to me that if we raise the level of engagement, academics, and fun (yes, fun!) for all students and teachers, Phoebe will benefit by not only her inclusion, but by being prompted to rise to the level of the entire class (and, amazingly, sometimes exceeding that level).


The phrase “a rising tide lifts all boats” is a testament to my wife’s endearment for all people, whether they’ve invisible differences like our daughter's or not. “No one”, she would say, “and no family is immune from some sort of challenges of one type or another”. This is why we believe that every person, regardless of their station in life, deserves to be uplifted, supported, and accommodated. No matter what.


Inspiration for Innovation

Phoebe's journey has been the catalyst for my career shift into neuroscience and AI ethics. Witnessing her struggles with sensory sensitivities and attention issues sparked a desire to create solutions that could help her and others like her, especially around distractibility, anxiety, and fatigue. This personal connection has given me a unique perspective on the intersection of technology, neurodiversity, and mental health—allowing me to design apps and assistive technologies that are both practical, accommodating, and empathetic.


One of the most significant innovations inspired by Phoebe's experiences is the development of apps and wearable devices that provide real-time sensory accommodations. These devices use AI-driven algorithms to detect changes in the user's environment and adjust their support accordingly. This personalized approach ensures that each user receives the personalized support they need to feel comfortable and engaged.


Moreover, my work in AI ethics is deeply influenced by Phoebe's needs. I am committed to ensuring that AI is developed with neurodivergent individuals in mind, prioritizing their safety, dignity, and empowerment. By doing so, we can begin to harness the power of AI to create a more inclusive and supportive world for everyone.


Challenges and Triumphs

Raising a neurodivergent child comes with its share of challenges. From managing sensory overload in public spaces to advocating for accommodations in educational settings (and eventually in employment contexts), every day presents new obstacles. However, these challenges have also taught us valuable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of community.


One of the most significant challenges we faced was navigating the healthcare system. Coordinating between different specialists, managing medication regimens, and dealing with insurance complexities and state agencies can be overwhelming (and exhausting). Yet, through these experiences, we learned the importance of being patient, driven, and proactive advocates for Phoebe's needs.


Despite these challenges, Phoebe's journey has been marked by numerous triumphs. Her determination to pursue her passions, whether at the collegiate level pursuing a degree in environmental science and policies, inspires us daily. Her resilience in the face of adversity reminds us that every individual has the potential to thrive, regardless of their neurodiverse status.


Moreover, Phoebe's journey has taught us the value of celebrating small victories. Whether it was mastering a new skill or simply enjoying a day without sensory overload, every achievement was a testament to her strength and determination.


Advocacy and Community Building

As a family, we have learned that advocacy is not just about supporting our own child but also about creating a more inclusive society for all neurodivergent individuals. By sharing our story and engaging with other neurodiverse families, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of support and inclusion.


One of the most powerful tools we use in advocacy is storytelling. By sharing our experiences and highlighting the challenges faced by neurodivergent families, we can inspire change and foster empathy. This storytelling has been instrumental in my work, helping me connect with policymakers, researchers, and technologists who share our vision of a more inclusive world.


Moreover, building community is crucial for neurodiverse families. By connecting with others who understand our journey, we can find support, advice, and solidarity. This sense of community has been a lifeline for us, providing emotional support during difficult times and practical advice on managing daily life with neurodivergent children. Some of our dearest and lifelong friends (who are more like family) were fostered through stories that led to community that led to deep relationships.


For example, participating in advocacy groups has allowed us to amplify neurodivergent voices and push for policy changes that benefit neurodivergent individuals, initially at the community, then at the state level. This collective effort has been instrumental in creating a more inclusive environment, from accessible health insurance support to more inclusive and supportive educational systems.


The Role of Education in Neurodiverse Support

Education plays a critical role in supporting neurodivergent individuals. From early childhood to adulthood, academic settings can either empower or hinder neurodivergent students. As a family, we have navigated various educational systems, advocating for accommodations that allow Phoebe to thrive.


One of the most significant challenges in education is ensuring that neurodivergent students receive the support they need. This often involves working closely with educators to develop personalized learning plans, advocating for sensory, time, and testing accommodations, and ensuring that the curriculum is inclusive and accessible via technologies for time-shifting support.


Moreover, education extends beyond the classroom. By fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding, we can create a society that values neurodiversity and promotes equal opportunities for all. This involves educating the public about neurodiverse needs, challenging stereotypes, and celebrating the contributions of neurodivergent people.


The Impact of Technology on Neurodiverse Support

Technology has been a game-changer in supporting neurodivergent individuals. From assistive devices to AI-driven solutions, these innovations have the potential to enhance autonomy, learning, and quality of life. My work in developing wearable devices and apps that provide sensory accommodations leading to improved attention, focus, energy, and calm is a testament to this potential.


Moreover, AI ethics plays a critical role in ensuring that these technologies are developed with neurodivergent individuals in mind. By prioritizing safety, dignity, and empowerment, we can create solutions that are not just effective but also respectful of user privacy and dignity.

The journey of raising a neurodivergent child has taught me that every individual has the potential to thrive, regardless of their neurodiverse status. By amplifying neurodivergent voices and fostering collaboration between families, researchers, and policymakers, we can create a comprehensive support system that addresses the diverse needs of neurodivergent individuals across their lifespan. It is critical that such systems and supports be driven by actual lived experience, rather than presumed need.


Ultimately, the power of neurodiverse families lies not just in their resilience but in their ability to inspire change and advocate for a more inclusive society. By sharing our stories, supporting one another, and pushing for innovation and advocacy, we can build a world that values diversity and promotes equal opportunities for all.
